Disclaimer – I decided to restart the MWNL due to the fact that I screwed up the league stats in Ballstat/Ballscore. It was an error on my part and not an issue with the program. This time around, I am using iScore on my Kindle to keep stats.
It is not often when you are using an All-Star, HOF or specialty set to find yourself in the middle of a pitcher’s duel. Today, Satchel Paige and Slim Jones had just that for the first seven innings of the game before an error, by one of the best shortstops in Negro League history, opened the floodgates.
Jones was staked to a 2-0 lead through seven innings thanks to a Pop Lloyd RBI single in the second and a Buck Leonard solo tater in the sixth. The top of the eighth started innocently enough as Martin Dihigo was caught looking while pinch hitting for Paige. Cristobal Torriente followed with a single to put the tying run at the plate for the Stars. Rap Dixon hit a routine double play grounder that Lloyd bobbled to put runners on first and second. John Beckwith topped an infield dribbler and the bases were loaded with one out. Jones, now dealing with a jam for the first time all day, proceeded to walk the number five hitter Mule Suttles to force in the first run. Tubby Scales(catching the split on his card) chased Slim Jones from the game with a bases loaded triple and the score was quickly 4-2 St. Louis.
Bill Holland relieved Jones and gave up the final run when Dobie Moore (off the pitcher’s card) laced a two out RBI single to center field.
Dihigo pitched the final two innings for the Stars. He gave up one hit and struck out one.
Jones cruised through the first seven innings of the game never allowing more than one base runner in an inning with none of those getting past second base.
Neil Robinson went 3 for 4 for the Monarchs only needing a home run to complete the cycle.
