Pittsburgh tops Memphis in extras, Rap Dixon plays hero
Memphis struck first in the top of the third with five straight hits off of Chet Brewer. Jud Wilson capped off the hit barrage with a two run single. Pittsburgh tied things up in the top of the fourth after Sam Bankhead tripled in two and Bill Perkins hit a sac fly to score Bankhead.
Memphis, trailing 6-5 heading into the bottom of the ninth, had Newt Allen hit a one out single off of relief pitcher Bullet Rogan. After a Jimmie Crutchfield pop out, Wilson came back to the plate with the Red Sox hopes of winning on his back. After working the count full, he roped a double down the line to score Allen to knot up the game at six.
Rap Dixon(who tripled in two in the 7th) led off the top of the tenth by coaxing a walk out of Cannonball Redding. Dixon promptly stole second and was bunted over to third by Alec Radcliff. Memphis pulled the infield in and Bankhead was able to slap one through the right side to give the Crawfords a 7-6 lead.
Rube Currie came in to pitch the bottom of the tenth, trying to close out the victory for Pittsburgh, after Sam Pennington walked and Charles Blackwell singled him to third. Dewey Creacy greeted Currie with a RBI single to tie the game once again and put the winning run at third with no outs. Pittsburgh’s manager decided to walk Louis Santop to load the bases and pitch to Redding. Redding hit a one hop smash to Bankhead at second, he fired home for the first out and Perkins relay to first barely beat Redding for the double play. Pittsburgh was one out away from getting out of a bases loaded no out jam. Allen was retired easily on a lazy fly ball and the game went on to the eleventh.
Fats Jenkins drew a walk between outs in the top of the eleventh and galloped hard into third on a Buck Leonard single off of Roosevelt Davis. With runners on the corners and two outs, Memphis decided to pitch to Dixon one more time. This turned out to be a mistake as Dixon smashed his third hit of the game(4th RBI) to give the Crawfords the lead one final time.
Memphis sent up Crutchfield, Wilson and Big John Beckwith in the bottom of the eleventh, but Currie retired them in order.
Pittsburgh Crawfords – 9
Memphis Red Sox – 7
