Satchel downs Crawfords for ninth victory
Satchel Paige tossed a complete game victory only giving up three runs to the vaunted Pittsburgh line up. The Crawfords jumped on Satch early scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning as Rap Dixon doubled in Pete Hill and a Mule Suttles groundout scored Dixon two batters later.
Satch settled down after the first and kept the Craws off balance throwing a combination of neck balls, knee balls, and drop-balls.
The Red Sox trailed by one heading into the top of the seventh when they rallied to take the lead for good. Newt Allen drew a walk to lead things off against Slim Jones. Jud Wilson and John Beckwith followed with singles, the latter scoring Allen. Jones then induced back to back groundouts from Bullet Joe Rogan and Superman Pennington and it looked like he would get out of the inning with a tie. Dewey Creacy had other things on his mind as he ripped a two-out, two-rbi double to give Memphis the lead.
Pittsburgh came storming back in the ninth off of Paige as Alex Radcliffe smashed a one-out triple to the gap in right-center. Bill Monroe followed with a single and it looked like Paige was tiring as the score crept to 5-3. Ol’ Satch sawed off Bill Perkins bat to get the game-ending double play groundout.
Slim Jones, who leads the league in strikeouts (134), had a rough outing giving up five earned runs in seven innings. Rube Currie pitched two scoreless innings in relief on Jones.
Jimmy Lyons had four singles in the lead-off spot for Memphis.
