Matlock dominates in two-hitter

Memphis Red Sox pitcher Leroy Matlock turned in one of the most dominant performances of the season this afternoon. Allowing only two singles and nary a walk, no baserunners got past first base for the Kansas City Monarchs. His game score of 86 ties two other pitchers(Nip Winters, Satchel Paige) for top performance of the season.

Matlock started by retiring the first seven batters that he faced before giving up a one-out single to the scuffling Buck O’Neill (.201 avg). Leroy went on to retire the next 15 batters before Ray Dandridge singled with one out in the eighth.

“Louis called a great game. I threw whatever he called. My defense was spectacular as well, robbed some hits out there today.” said an excited Matlock.

While Matlock was dominating the game, Bill Byrd was matching him inning by inning as the score remained 0-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth. Jimmy Crutchfield led off with a single and moved to second on a Jud Wilson base knock. Big John Beckwith, near the top of the league in rbi’s, was up next and it looked like Memphis would finally grab the lead for Leroy. Beckwith grounded into a 6-4-3 double play putting Crutchfield at third with two outs. Superman Pennington calmly stepped to the plate next for the Red Sox and slapped a double down the line to finally give Matlock the lead.

Jud Wilson(.347 avg) provided a little breathing room with a solo shot in the bottom of the eighth inning, his fifth of the year. Matlock improved to 4-3 on the season with a 5.32 ERA.
