Hilton hurls, Papa pops ABC’s to victory
Hilton Smith pitched one of his better games of the season and Verdell Mathis came in and uncharacteristically put out the fire in the bottom of the ninth.
Cool Papa Bell gave the ABC’s the early lead with a two-run home run in the top of the third inning off of Webster McDonald. Smith helped his own cause by delivering a two-out rbi single in the top of the fifth-inning plating Willard Brown who had doubled leading off the inning.
Bernardo Baro lead off the bottom of the sixth inning for Chicago with his fourth home run of the season closing the gap to 3-1. Hilton settled right back down and retired nine of the next ten batters only allowing one base runner on a rare Ghost Marcelle error.
Jump to the top of the ninth inning, Brown hits a two-out triple and Indy has a chance to increase their slim two-run lead. Quincy Trouppe is up next against John Donaldson. Troupe had singled in the third and doubled in the top of the seventh inning for the ABC’s. Donaldson brilliantly changed up speeds on the slugger Trouppe and got him to loft a lazy fly ball to end the inning.
Cristobal Torriente led off the bottom of the ninth with a sharp single bringing up the intimidating Josh Gibson. Gibson wasn’t able to tie it up but did single to put runners on first and second with nobody out. Smith had a 5+ ERA entering the game and has struggled the entire season. A chance to finish up a dominating performance was starting to slip away. Tubby Scales was up next and coaxed a walk out of Smith prompting player/manager Oscar Charleston to make a change.
Charleson was short on choices to come out of the pen as his usual closer, Tom Williams, had pitched three innings the day before. Charleston hesitantly chose to give the ball to Mathis, he of the 9+ ERA entering the game.
First up against Mathis was league legend Pop Lloyd, but Lloyd tapped weakly back to the mound for the force out at home. Next up was Judy Johnson. Johnson shot a ground ball in the gap between Charleston and second basemen Rev Cannady. Cannady made a tremendous play to snag the ball and get Johson at first but a run does score to make it 3-2 with two outs and runners on second and third. Ben Taylor, yesterday’s hero, strolled to the plate with a chance to do it again today. Taylor hit a routine two-hopper to Home Run Johnson at short and Mathis garnered his first save of the season preserving a much needed Hilton Smith gem.

Heavy’s hits spoil duel
Max Manning allowed Buck O’Neil to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game
and Oscar Heavy Johnson hit 2 doubles and had 4 RBI at Comiskey Park where
the Kansas City Monarchs beat the Pittsburgh Crawfords by the score of 4 to 1.
Manning(5-7) looked very much in control throughout the day. He didn’t give
up much, just 7 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings. The teams had been locked in a
scoreless duel until the 6th inning.
Slim Jones(7-3) was the losing pitcher. He surrendered only 2 runs and 4 hits
in 8 innings. Kansas City now has a record of 20-22. Pittsburgh can’t seem
to snap out of their recent ‘funk’. Now they have a miserable 2-8 record
over the last couple weeks and have fallen into a first-place tie with Chicago.
